Summer Reading

Incoming 9th graders are to read the book NIGHTJOHN by Gary Paulsen.

Incoming 10th graders are to read the book STAYING FAT FOR SARAH BYRNES by Chris Crutcher.

Incoming 11th graders are to read the book TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee.

Incoming 12th graders are to read the book THINGS FALL APART by Chinua Achebe.

In addition to the books (above) that your English teacher is requiring you to read, each student at Eastwood Academy and in the Houston ISD must read at least four additional books during the summer. Please see the links (to the left) for suggested reading lists.

Choose four books that are appropriate for your reading level to read before school starts in August. For each book that you read (including the one required by your English teacher), students must complete one of the following:
  1. a book notes sheet (handed out during June 2009 orientation) OR
  2. an AR Reading Log, OR
  3. a book review (sample and format on the website).
During the school year, you will be required to earn AR points. When school starts in August, you will be given time at the beginning of the school year to take quizzes on your summer reading books.

If you want to check if a book is in the AR database (if there is an AR quiz), you may go to Renaissance Learning's storefront and search for books in the AR system. The website will give you the level of the book and the points you will earn from the test.

Be sure to keep notes on the books you read!

And, have fun reading this summer!!!
